Aullidos a favor de Joe Murray es un video grabado directo en VHS de fragmentos de otras películas en DVD. Básicamente, se trata de tomar partes de estas películas en las que la pantalla se vuelva negra.

La anécdota detrás de la pieza viene de del programa Rocko’s Modern Life, caricatura creada por Joe Murray y desarrollada por Nickelodeon en los noventa. En un episodio, los personajes principales descubren que el productor de su programa de caricaturas favorito es hijo de su vecino, un cuarentón amargado que los odia. El exitoso productor es, de hecho, infeliz: desprecia la televisión, detesta las caricaturas y quiere cumplir su sueño artístico: tallar un bodegón directamente sobre una montaña, en un extraño vuelco del Land Art estadounidense, pero no puede renunciar en el trabajo, así que lleva a Rocko y sus amigos a que hagan su propio programa de caricaturas, Las Botanas Locas, con la esperanza de que sea tan malo que lo despidan, sin embargo, se vuelve un éxito de culto de la noche a la mañana. Trata de sabotearlo por todos los medios, pero los productores y el público simplemente están locos por él, así que, resignado, decide tomarlo en sus manos para, por fin, hacer arte. A los cinco segundos de ballet y música clásica lo cancelan y lo despiden, y se va al desierto a cumplir su sueño. Veinte años después ha terminado, transformó la montaña en un bodegón: una meseta con un tazón, una botella, uvas, una naranja, una manzana. Se ha vuelto loco, no ha hecho otra cosa en todo ese tiempo.

 Lo que me sirvió para comenzar esta pieza es uno de sus intentos por sabotear el programa: prende la luz en el cuarto de revelado y logra echar a perder el filme. Rocko dice que deben volver a hacerlo, pero él dice que así está bien, que pasarán 10 minutos de pantalla negra tal como está. Al día siguiente la prensa los califica de genios, al pasar en cadena nacional una pantalla negra por diez minutos.

Lo primero que me vino a la mente a la hora de pensar en cómo iba a pegar los pedazos de película fue lo más obvio: pegar la pantalla negra todo el tiempo que dura originalmente en la película, sin embargo, cambié la idea a una mucho más simple y sintética: detener la pantalla negra y grabar ese still por un cierto tiempo, el mismo para todos los demás. Esta decisión viene de no querer hacer un videocollage, pues involucrando el tiempo de las películas introduciría una dimensión que no me interesa en la imagen, sino en el acto de ver. Si tomara las secuencias en lugar de los stills estaría privilegiando el hecho de que son parte de una narrativa y estaría trabajando con fragmentos de la misma, estaría haciendo otra película, y no quiero hacer otra película, sino desarrollar una idea saboteada de cómo ver un video y qué posición tomar ante él. Quiero que el tiempo de mi video sea generado por el negro y por mi decisión de verlo; la duración la dicta mi capacidad de observar estas pantallas.
